It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and bordered by Glendora to the east and Lancaster to the west. They built a mission here and named it Nuestra Señora de los Angeles after their patron saint, Queen of Spain. In 1847, gold was discovered near Pinole and soon there were numerous miners hereabouts. In 1860, gold seekers Carlos Antonio Aguilar and Manuel Moreno discovered additional gold deposits at Pinos Altos but no one exploited them until 1871 when Italian-American miner Giovanni della Valle put his claims in operation. In 1879–80 two American brothers named George Hargrave (George Harrigan)and John Moulton opened an agricultural store here which became known as The Grapeseed Store before moving to Pasadena in 1886. The town's first post office was established on February 15, 1888 with Jno Pritchard as the first mail carrier from Lancaster; it later moved to its current location on Spring Street. A Carnegie library was built in 1912 by Mrs. Florence Stevenson for $10,000 which remains operational today asaddleback building #1 of Pinole Unified School District No.#1
