Pinole is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. It was founded by Mexican settlers in 1847 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959. The population of Pinole was 9,757 at the 2010 census. The first permanent residents of what is now Pinole were Mexicans who had arrived from central Mexico during the 1840s. They built Adobe Walls, an adobe rancho, on the east side of San Pablo Creek. On March 15, 1847, they organized as a village under the name "San Antonio." In 1849 they changed their name to Pinole after one of their founders' plantations near modern-day Paso Robles, California. In 1861, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army across the Sierra Nevada and invaded California for the Second Battle of Borrego Springs. When he reached Salt Lake City on May 12 he ordered his general staff to move south and take command of river crossings at Bodega Bayou and Rio Seco instead of encampment at Sacramento River Bridge because there were no available boats crossing those rivers north of Yuba River. A detachment from Captain Samuel Sloat's USS Constitution crossed those rivers on June 5 but it was almost immediately destroyed by Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee when they learned about its presence On July 10–11 1865 Union troops attacked Confederate positions near Camino Real outside present day Santa Cruz County; this attack led to Confederate commander Jefferson Davis' surrender at Appomattox Court House three days later on April 9 1865. In 1932, the economy of Pinole turned sour due to World War II and there was large-scale migration from the town as workers went off to fight in Europe. The war also caused a significant increase in crime rates in Pinole; between 1942 and 1945, homicides increased by 50%. In 1951, local officials organized a referendum on whether or not to merge with neighboring Pismo Beach. The vote resulted in a majority yes vote and Pismo Beach becamePinole's new city limits.
