On October 15, 1848, the California Gold Rush began when prospectors discovered gold at Sutter's Mill on the San Joaquin River. The rush quickly turned into a frenzy as people poured into the area to find new land and riches. By January of 1850, over 6,000 men had left California for the gold fields in Nevada and Oregon. The pace of production quickened as more and more miners were found in new areas. In just a few months, over $2 million had been collected from around Sacramento County during the 1848-1850 city gold rush. On February 3, 1850, City Marshal John Gage issued an order closing all stores within two miles of downtown Sacramento due to high amounts of booty being taken from local businesses. However, this did not stop rampant looting; arrests were made daily throughout the city for booty robberies. By March 4th only about 350 citizens remained in downtown Sacramento after looters razed most of it to make way for their finds.
