The mission was abandoned in 1821, but a grange continued to operate until 1864 when it was sold to José Joaquín Márquez and his wife Soledad. In 1906, Coyote Cano used land adjacent to Pico Alto Road and U.S. Route 101 as part of hismining operations; this led to the name "Cano's Hill" being given to pinoles that grew thereabouts. By 1912, over 100 businesses had been established in Pinole with a total payroll of $10 million dollars annually (). In 1916, John Fenton decided to open a grocery store in what is now downtown Pinole after seeing an advertisement for one in an issue of "West Coast American". He organized local residents into their first association called "The People's Association", which purchased property from Coyote Cano on Pico Alto Road east of Highway 101 for development into a new town called Fentonville () . In 1922 Pacific Gas & Electric Company built its first line through pinoles - today part of Interstate 5 - so growth continued at a steady pace without major infrastructure investments until about 1975 when then-Governor Jerry Brown ordered PG&E out due to concerns about environmental damage caused by their coal mine operations nearby . Downtown Pinole experienced rapid growth following incorporation as well as commercial development off Pico Alto Road throughout the early 21st century resulting in increased traffic congestion on I-5 southbound between State Street/Fentonville Boulevard and Exposition Boulevard/Palo Alto Avenue; however since 2000s efforts have focused on improving infrastructure such as widening I-5 southbound between State Street/Fentonville Boulevard and Redwood City exit 9 (), creating new intersections at Federal Way (just north of downtown) and Exposition Boulevard/Palo Alto Avenue (just east of downtown), curtailing access miles from I-5 southbound during peak hours (), redeveloping several blocks beyond current Downtown boundaries including building two high school campuses off Pico Alto Rd., along with moves by Mayor Greg Stanton towards developing much or all Downtown along La Jolla Cove instead ().

The first European to visit Pinole was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on Aug. 24, 1542. He named the area San Pablo and built a chapel there for Mission San Francisco de Asís (a Franciscan mission). In 1849, following Gold Rush Fever, many people moved to Pinole from nearby towns such as Lafayette and Oroville because of its easy access to gold and other minerals. The discovery of oil in California in 1901 brought new development to Pinole, with businesses such as Refining Company No. 2 opening up shop near Highway 101 and Railroad Avenue. By 1922, pinolite production had become so important that it was decided to move the refinery closer to town so that more people could benefit from its benefits. However, this decision also led to problems because pinolite is an environmentally sensitive commodity which requires careful handling when extracting it from the ground; thus it became difficult for locals to keep up with refinery production. In 1935-36, a group of local businessmen founded the Pinole Chamber of Commerce in order To promote economic development within the city limits while still benefiting from refinery profits
Pinole is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 41,819 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1846 by Junius B. Pinole and his wife Eliza C. Pinole as part of Rancho Santa Anita. The townsite became a city in 1957 and remained so until it merged with Riverside on April 1, 2018.
