On November 12th 1856 by order of Governor John Gorman US Army Sergeant James Fenton established military post at Minterville (now Redding) on shoreline of Sacramento River to prevent squatters from taking up land claimed by Rancho Rincon de la Salle heirs including José Antonio Pina who founded Rincon de la Salle Mill on October 26th 1850 with Don José Antonio Pina and Manuel Nieto also named inventors since they were responsible for Waring's Patent No 579 dated December 7th 1848 that granted exclusive rights to grow corn without discrimination against other products In 1865 John Atwood organized a group called First Presbyterian Church which worshipped at original mission Adobe Site southwest cornerof present day Main Street & Third Avenue On January 8th 1870 Admited black Female named Sarah Jane Johnson came into town limits along side men Emory Goldy & Hiram Sibley sheRegisterd with Name above ground level real estate lot next door new adobe building erected stone by Stone mason then moved inside after dark this building served until 1938 when it burned down due to faulty wiring underground

He named it Santa Cruz de la Sierra because of its high mountain peak, but no one knows for sure where he got this information. In 1847, Antonio Canizares set up a store here and soon began trading goods with Native Americans who lived along the riverbank. In 1859, when American troops led by General Kearny assaulted Mexican positions at Calaveras Hills during their campaign against Mexico, general Santiago Cerrano retreated downriver to Big Sur before turning back upriver to help Kearny's army cross over into Sonoma County. A detachment of Ulysses S Grant's Sixth Cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer passed through Pinole on their way northward that day andcaused some excitement when they discovered several tents pitched outside Canizares' store while they were passing through town on their way back from skirmishing with native tribes near Mount Shasta. On July 16, 1861, during American Civil War Battle of Bear Flag Station (), Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee attacked an Union cavalry unit near present-day Pinole after withdrawing from battle following a fierce engagement around Placerville south of Sacramento Lake (). Over 50 men were killed or captured including Captain Samuel Denton Wiley and his troop commanded by Major John Witherspoon; one cannonball hit Wiley in the spine and killed him instantly (Wiley had been leading his horseand wagon caravan out from Bear Flag Station when Confederate forces attacked).
