Pinole is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 936 at the 2010 census[1] and 1,859 as of 2018. It is located in the eastern half of San Bernardino County on the east bank of the San Gabriel River. Pinole is about 8 miles (13 km) south-southwest of downtown Los Angeles and 10 miles (16 km) north-northwest of downtown Riverside. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pinole were Spanish missionaries who landed there in 1769 during the Peon Expedition under Juan Bautista Alvarado. Jesuit missionary Fray Pedro de Tejada explored much of inland Southern California in 1776 and named this area Califórnia del Norte after his native land, New Spain. A post office called Rancho Aguilar was established at present-day Pinole in 1874, but no town developed until 1885 when John Dominguez moved his family from Placentia to start a cotton gin near present-day Avenida Pico de la Hoz and built a house on it which became known as Villa Dominguez. In 1896, oil wells were drilled here by Anthony Beale and others which led to increased production and made pinole an important local center for industry beginning in the 1920s.[2] In 1940, after World War II ended with Japan's surrender,PINOLE residents voted not to become part of Greater Los Angeles because they felt that their cultural traditions would not be blending well with those living around Hollywood Boulevard or Normandie Avenue. PINOLE has since regained itsintegrity as a separate community within Southern California's largest city,[3][4][5] enjoying many economic advantages over its nearest neighbor including: A large percentage of PINOLE'S workforce are employed outside its borders; most notably government workers stationed domestically or abroad; high concentrations of lawyers, doctors and other professionals; quality schools growing up among young people;[6] few resident businesses engaged in nonresidential activities such as manufacturing or retailing; vast open spaces inside both towns boundaries for recreational use only

Pinole is a small town in southern California, located on the San Joaquin River. It was founded by Latinos in 1853 as part of the Rancho Pinole Mexican land grant. The name comes from the Spanish word "pino" which means oak tree. The first post office opened in 1857 and the current one was built in 1915. The area where Pinole now stands was once home to many Native American groups including the Kumeyaay, Hupa and Wintu. To this day, there are several cultural remnants of these tribes remain in the community such as their traditional clothing and food items. One of Pinole's earliest businesses was a bakery that operated from 1853-1854. The owner, José Rivera, operated his shop out of a building he had erected near what is now Main Street. In 1860, Rivera purchased land east of present-day Church Street and built what is now Pioneer Hall for use as a schoolhouse for his children. In 1861, Don Pedro Ferrer sold 8 acres (3 ha) on the north side of present-day Elmira Road to Francisco Cuellar for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). This site would later become known as "Elmira Road". In 1865, Ferrer sold additional land along Elmira Road to Santiago Canales for $2 per acre (0.80 ha). Canales engaged Manuel Nieto to build him a millinery store on this property beginning operation in 1865 under the name El Progreso de la Belleza y el Arte Novenaño (The Progress of Beauty and New Art Novenaño). Santiago Canales also acquired 3 acres (1 ha) south of present-day Elmira Road for $4 per acre ($12 m²), which became known as "Canales Park." This parcel would later be used for commercial farming purposes and contain numerous homes until it was bought by city officials in 1984 and designated an open space park with trails running through it
