Pinole is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 26,907 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County and home to the University of California, Pinole Campus. The name "Pinole" means "humble place." The first Europeans to explore what is now Pinole were Spanish explorers in 1542 who named it Encinas de la Bolsa (Encina Valley). The original land grant for Hacienda Bernardo included all that currently constitutes modern dayPinole township as well as parts of present day Hercules and Arroyo Grande townships east and south thereof; alluvial plains lying between these two townships were also granted to the community; however this portion including present day Arroyo Grande township proper never came into being until after 1906 when streets and thoroughfares were laid out through what are now portions of those townships with assistance from then Mayor Aiden Whitehurst during soil survey work done for new municipal boundaries which should have included much or all of today'sArroyo Grande Township proper

The name of the town came from a location called Pinyon Flat, which was part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Bexar. In 1851, the United States built Fort Point on an island in San Francisco Bay to protect American shipping against Mexican attacks. The fort was destroyed in 1852 by Mexico and never rebuilt. In 1875, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Congress passed a law giving land to African Americans for education and economic development in Southern California. This led tothe establishment of Black University and Polytechnic Institute in Pinole. The town also saw its first white settler, George Capps, arrive in 1876.
