In addition to these new riches, many new businesses were started up during this time including an flourmill run by Augustus Earle Barnes that manufactured goods such as bread and butter; a cigar factory run by Manuel Gomez; a harness shop with six horses used for pulling wagons carrying goods; and two hotels – one called The White Horse Inn which operated from 1870 until 1902; and another called The Republican which opened in 1872 before closing down in 1905 because of financial problems During World War II (1939-1945), Pinole played an important role within both Defense Department activities as well as helping gather supplies for various war fronts throughout California while also providing work opportunities for local citizens who had participated in military service It wasn’t until 1973 that voting rights were granted to all citizens regardless of race or gender following passage of Proposition 11 which increased voter turnout statewide Finally achieving legal status as an incorporated city on January 1, 2005 made Pinole one of only 20 cities nationally designated “Model City” status by Mayor Willie Brown .

However, there are still some evidence that early residents used sawmills hereabouts as late as 1886 when logs were measured with a man-made pond at the base of Mt Diablo to determine whether they were too large to be cut into smaller boards and then transported overland or brought by water downriver to be cut into lumber at another mill
