By 1870, many people had settled around what would become Pinole; by 1880 it had a population of 1,500. The first post office was established at Pinole on October 10, 1872; it closed on December 14, 1907. A new post office called "Bodega" opened at Pinole on February 2, 1909; it closed on July 5 of that year due to lack of mail service from nearby Bodega Valley which became part of Sacramento County shortly thereafter. The first school in what is now Pinole was built as an academy school by Methodist missionaries in 1886; it served as such until 1918 when local parents began sending their children to schools outside the town because they could not find one within three miles (5 km). In 1916–1917 a new high school building was constructed with money contributed by Mrs. Florence Hahnauer who also donated land for the purpose beside her home which still stands today next door to the old high school building bearing her name: “Mrs Florence Hahnauer High School”). The town name derives from "Pine" and "Ole", two local hills that can be seen from the town's center. Spanish missionaries founded Mission San José de la Purísima Concepción in 1821 and Mission Santa Clara del Valle in 1826. In 1851, an American military officer named George Armstrong Custer led an attack on Mexican forces at Tejon Rancho during what is now known as Battle of Emmons Hill. After his victory over Mexican troops, General Crocker ordered Custer to burn down Mission San José de la Purisima Concepción because it had not been turned into a Catholic mission following his orders. A group of young men from Pinole began rebuilding the church after its destruction and renamed it La Purísima Concepción (theholyconception). In 1862, gold was discovered at Sutters Mill northeast of town and quickly became a gold rush destination for miners looking for new opportunities in California’s Gold Rush years. Townspeople built their own mills soon after to process all the gold coming through Sutters Mill on their way to markets across North America. As production increased and more people moved into Pinole, businesses like The Saloon opened up along with churches like Our Lady of Guadalupe which were also popular tourist attractions during this time period. A major fire destroyed much of downtown Pinole on July 9th 1906 while merchants were closed for lunchtime; however some small businesses managed to reopen before nightfall due to donations by citizens including Bishop McAleese who offered free food if they could catch any arsonists responsible for starting the fire The new downtown core started growing again with development taking off around 1930 when 3rd Street became commercialized as a main drag with many residential buildings being erected along 3rd Street between Foothill Boulevard and Clayborn Avenue . Thereafter until about 1970 many businesses closed or changed hands multiple times until finally becoming replaced by one large business called Ali Baba's Grocery which anchored 3rd Street from Clayborn Avenue south all the way down Crystal City Way . In 1970 startup software company Apple Inc relocated its headquarters from Cupertino,,CA to nearby Mountain View , CA . This change accelerated growth on Third Street which then shifted away from old industrial areas towards newer office/hotel complexes beginning around 1990 creating today's vibrant downtown core
