Piedmont, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 41,828 at the 2010 census. Piedmont is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and is bordered by Lafayette to the north, Walnut Creek to the east, San Ramon to the south and Richmond to the west. The first permanent settlers in what would become Piedmont were families from Northern Italy who arrived in 1849. They named their new community after Mount Ponderosa in northern Italy. In 1856 they sold out to American claimants under an Agreement between General William Tecumseh Sherman and then-President James Buchanan. The town was platted in 1861 by Major John Waddedick of Concordia Township with land grant from British Columbia Governor John A. Macdonald for $5 per acre (2 km²).Waddick named his community "Piedmont" after Mount Diablo near where he lived until his death in 1865 at age 67 years old. By 1870 there were over 100 residents in "Piedmont". It became a cash settlement before it was turned into an agricultural district by state mandate in 1915 with aid from the federal government through irrigation projects In 1943 World War II began when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor; because much of Bay Area was unoccupied at that time there wasn't any damage or loss of life as occurred elsewhere due to air raids later that year; however some people did lose their homes and businesses as a result of incendiary bombing raids which flattened entire neighborhoods including "Piedmont". A post office opened at "Piedmont" on July 1, 1862, and remained open until it closed on February 14, 1923 (). vernacular names include: Pleasant Hill (1865), Millbrae Heights (1910), Antioch (1915), Pittsburg Junction (1923), Northgate Heights (1945) and Crescent City Heights (1968). This area has been known by various names since its earliest days including: Berkeley Springs (1850s), Diamond Valley Rancho de las Pulgas Mexican Land Grant Claim No. 725 East of I-580 etc.. The name change followed annexation into Contra Costa County by San Francisco during 1912 when most of Oakland took place across county lines as part of deals made during county consolidation initiatives led by Supervisor George Hearst . For many years Piedmont was considered an agricultural center with cattle ranching being its primary industry but this has changed over time as more jobs have arisen within technology companies such as Googleplex and Facebook Inc., which are located adjacent to Interstate 580 just outside town limits
