A group of American Civil War veterans called "The Forty-Niners" decided to stay and fight for independence from Mexico when they heard about Mexico's planned invasion of California. On November 12, 1847 they started their march acrosscountry from Stockton upriver past today's Fresno into what is now central California (the forty-niners are now known as Californios). They camped around Mount Shasta where they built a stockade against possible Mexican attack and named it Camp Grant after General Ulysses S. Grant who had stopped Mexico's advance at Monterey Bay two months earlier (November 3). Confederate General John Jellico attacked this camp early one morning but was repulsed with heavy losses before he could even reach its walls; following this victory Confederate forces moved upriver and surprised another Union garrison at Grove Lake about 14 miles upstream from present day Pomona (October 29th 1799) which led GenUlysses S. Grant to order an artillery bombardment that destroyed most ofJellico's army at Red Bluff (March 25th 1865)). To commemorate these events Judge David Waddell erected a marble column near Grove Lake commemorating both these battles: "Hereditary Enemies Peaceful Coexist" On January 15th 1861 Piedmont became the capital of Northern Californias new state of Mono County when Governor James Kwinkel reached agreements with local landowning ranchersSherman Atherton and George Hearst Sr., giving them title to large areas east of Oroville without compensation while maintaining full resident civil rights In 1906 it merged with other smaller southern California cities including Irwindale and Lancaster into what is now Fresno
