In 1835 Antonio Canseco bought Rancho Seco from Alvarado and increased its size by buying adjacent ranchos totaling . In 1846 Manuel Nieto purchased Dos Rios Canyon Road west of present day Piedmont from Canseco for $1,000 (). This purchase also included land grant east of Dos Rios Canyon Road to future US Geological Survey employee George Sibley (). With these purchases, Nieto became one of the largest landowners in California. On December 12, 1898 an uneasy settlement grew around Mount Diablo when two parties consisting primarily white Californiansand two Native Americansdrove intowhat would become known as Old Ponderosa National Monument after reaching an agreement with local Indian leaders not to fight over who should clear land for cattle grazing purposes (). On July 20, 1901 president Grover Cleveland signed Executive Order 9802 creating Yosemite National Park (), which encompasses much or all of what is now central and southern Piedmont as well as parts of nearby Tulare County (). Most residents in central and eastern areas had moved away prior to President Theodore Roosevelt becoming president in 1913 and he inherited muchofthe national monument area including westernmost San Joaquin County () but kept most eastern portions within Yosemite National Park (). As result many businesses located along I-5 outside present day Fresno closed down during World War II while others such as Jardin Haine & Sons meat market were exempted from rationing because they sold food items other than gasoline fuel; however they closed down during the war due to lack of business during peacetime . The post office was relocated from downtown Pomona to a new building which still stands today in east Pleasanton off I-5 North about three miles east off exit 11A (Rancho Seco Rd). Post Office services terminated on June 30th 1945 when ZIP code 95659 became effective..
