Piedmont, California is a small town in Northern California. It is located south of Berkeley and east of San Francisco. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The community of Piedmont was first settled by Europeans in the late 18th century as part of the Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant issued to José Joaquín Cámpora and his wife María Luisa Cortés by Governor Pio Pico. The family ranched and farmed in what is now Piedmont for several generations until their death in 1948. In 1860, following the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho San Pablo to David Crocker and others including José Alfredo Botega and Fernando Woodbury. In 1865, Captain John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Hayward when he prospected on the north side of Eel River between Mount Diablo and Hayward Creek. The discovery led to a gold rush that began in 1865 and continued through 1868; over 1 million dollars were taken from the ground during those years alone. The town developed around this period with many new businesses being established: an opera house (1867), a mill (1869), a sawmill (1870), two churches (1871), three schools (1872–1901), four stores (1875–1900) – one each on Van Ness Avenue, Third Street, Masonic Drive, and Russian Hill Road – as well as residences for government officials such as Ulysses S. Grant during his time as President of America from 1881 to 1885; business people such as George Hearst who built Hearst Mansion in 1886; railroad magnate Samuel Inslee who donated land for Pacific Electric Railway Main Line Station in 1889; president William Howard Taft who donated $10 thousand for erection of Methodist Episcopal Church built adjacent to schoolhouse on First Street between Masonic Drive and Second Street; local businessmen such as James Stanford White who financed development of Hyde Park across University Avenue from Main Street where horse cars ran into trains at night before getting off at Fourth Street stop opposite Market Square until 1906 when they replaced tracks with electric light cables just west of School House Lane where they still run today; farmers like Augustus Bestand who raised corn above ground on lots along Coyote Canyon Rd., Elk Grove Rd., & Willowood Ave.; while other towns such as Hercules grew rapidly due to World War I immigration via shiplift or plane arrivals with goods moving upslope along Interstate 80 out towards Stockton or El Sobrante County

Piedmont is a small community in the San Bernardino Mountains of central California. It was founded in 1887 by George Fenton and his wife, Emma. The first post office was established in Piedmont in 1888.
