Pico Rivera is a small town in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 2,815 at the 2000 census. It is part of the San Bernardino– Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pico Rivera comes from two Spanish words: "Pico" meaning peak and "Rivera" meaning stream or river. This name was given to the entire valley by Mission San Gabriel (founded in 1771) because it drained into an estuary called Laguna Seca and lay just outside of RanchoFrijoles de las Conchas Mexican land grant. The first Europeans to visit Pico Rivera were Juan Bautista de Anza on September 14, 1769, while he was exploring southern California for Spain in search of a new route to Asia via Yuma Pass; Antonio Lopez Cabrillo on July 10, 1777 during his third voyage as captain of HMS Discovery; and José Maria De la Peña y Montoya on October 3, 1779 as second lieutenant aboard Concepcion under Captain Don José Rojas Fortunato with orders to explore inland waterways southward from San Diego Bay. These three men sighted what they thought were mountains but upon closer inspection realized that these must be Mount Wilson which later became one of Pico Rivera's most famous landmarks because its summit can be seen from almost anywhere in the area. On December 1, 1802 Manuel Nieto set out from Santa Fe with 400 horsemen1 under Captains Pedro Menéndez and Vicente Cámpora2 for an attempt unsuccessfully made by Father Junípero Serra2 about reaching our present-day Los Angeles County from Sebastopol (now Ventura County). They reached Pismo Creek near today's Hermitage Road about 12 miles east of today's town limits when their horses got sick and had to be abandoned there until winter rains allowed them to return the next spring. From here they built a campfires at what is now Frijoles Canyon State Park before continuing upriver where they found more water supplies and began their exploration northward along present day US 101 until they finally arrived at Los Angeles Harbor on February 20, 1810/11 after spending 322 days unsupported over snowbound mountain passes only able to find salt water rather than fresh water like they were looking for due mostly to bad weather conditions caused by strong winds driving rain clouds across topography that trapped hidden springs deep within high central California mountains above 6500 ft., limiting available surface runoff creating conditions ideal for annual floods that have occurred every decade since then primarily affectingHackberry Valley below 6000 ft including much of Northridge now parts of Anaheim and Sylmar
