Pico Rivera, California is a small town located in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on November 9, 1846 by pioneer David C. Wright and his wife Mary Anna Pico. The town grew rapidly after the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad's first main line from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 1849. Today, Pico Rivera is known for its demographics: it is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Southern California. Its residents are descendants of Spanish and Mexican immigrants who arrived in various waves throughout the years; as well as African Americans who were enslaved and later emancipated during the late 19th century. The early history of Pico Rivera can be traced back to 1846 when two groups of pioneers – David C. Wright and his wife Mary Anna Pico – moved from Santa Fe, New Mexico to founding what would become Pico Rivera. On November 9 that year, they established a small settlement on land that now includes parts of downtown Los Angeles. Although there were no laws against immigration at that time, many people believed that slavery could not be sustained in such an isolated area with so few resources available outside of Mexico City (the capital city at the time). Consequently, soon after their arrival some 12 individuals began working on a wagon road connecting Los Angeles with San Bernardino County. This venture became known as the "Calaveras Road." Only a few weeks after their planting operation had commenced another group of pioneers crossed into this new territory from San Diego County via Redlands Pass; they were led by William Henschel and named for General José Joaquin Murrieta (1803-1881), governor general during Mexican Independence War (1821-24). The original community name for this new locality was Nueva Esperanza de la Sierra; however, due to pronunciation difficulties many residents preferred simply to call themselves "Pico Rivera." By 1850 only about 20% of original inhabitants remained here within boundaries defined when post office was established - those living northward along Calaveras Creek (now Hollywood Boulevard) or eastward along Miracle Mile had all but vanished by then. In fact, according to census records from 1860 only 2 out of every 10 families living here still lived there 25 years later!
