Another account suggests that Captain Christopher Sutter founded a mission here in 1821 following his exploration of Chihuahua and Mexican state Alta California; he called it Monterey Mission because his ship anchored there for supplies during his trip from Monterey Bay to Yuma Pass. Pico Rivera is a small town located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Inyo County, California. The community was founded in 1875 by pioneers of Mexican descent who moved from the nearby Rancho Cucamonga. Pico Rivera's history dates back to 1869, when California State Senator James S. Gilmore and his brother-in-law, President Grant Holman, donated land for a water works project in what is now known as Gilmore Park. The Gilmore Park Water Works Company served southern Riverside County until it merged with the Municipal Water District of Southern California on October 1, 1951. Pico Rivera was incorporated on February 14, 1876. The first post office at Pico Rivera opened in 1881 and remained open until 1932. Pico Rivera has had two schools since its founding; one was closed in 1922 and replaced by a junior high school built in 1927; and the other operated until 1984 when it was replaced by a vocational school which currently houses thelibrary. In 1922, local developer John Ahern purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of adjacent unincorporated land that would become Pico Rivera Golf Course; he developed it into an open-air shopping center and planned to name it after his wife's father - José María Pérez de la Vega - but this plan failed to gain approval from county officials.
