Pico Rivera is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is located on the border of Riverside and Ventura Counties. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. Pico Rivera was named for John Pico, a Mexican landowner who contributed to its foundation by donating $5,000 in 1871. The community's first post office opened in 1875. The Normal School of California (now known as Pomona College) relocated from Claremont in 1922 to what is now the south side of Main Street in Pico Rivera. In 1925, the Community College Building on East Second Street was built and served as both a high school and college until it closed in 1971; it is currently used as home to Pomona High School's physical education department. In 1969, Lockheed Martin Corporation moved its headquarters from Sunnyvale to nearby Menlo Park after winning an bid for the then-new U2 plant there; today Lockheed Martin occupies most of that facility's east side across from Interstate 5 and just north of Interstate 10 outside of Menlo Park proper. During World War II many American soldiers were stationed here before being sent overseas; many local citizens also worked for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Company or other large companies during that time period. The 1945 fire which destroyed several businesses near la Mesa Boulevard killed six people and left over 100 homeless; this event has been referred to as "The holocaust" due to its magnitude and destructive nature. Polk signed Executive Order 9802 creating Don Vicente Chavez as forester for Los Angeles National Forest; Don Chavez had been appointed by President Polk to survey and manage forestlands east of Pasadena Boulevard in Alhambra Hills within Los Angeles National Park boundaries according to Interior Department Order No.: 8031 dated January 3, 1850 which established forest reserves around Porter Ranch northeast of downtown Los Angeles through the Tehachapi Mountains into Owens Valley near Lone Pine Canyon; these orders were designed to restrict development on federal lands south of Hollywood Boulevard while preserving natural resources within park boundaries
