Pico Rivera is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Covina–Monrovia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pico Rivera comes from its location on a hill near milepost 17 on U.S. Route 66, which served as a landmark for travelers since it was close to both Mexico and Arizona. A post office called Pico Rivera opened in 1885, and until 1912 it was part of San Bernardino County. In 1912, Pico Rivera became an independent municipality within Los Angeles County and has remained so ever since. The village had a school (grades K-12) until 1978 when it became part of Monrovia Unified School District. In 1939, Don Laughlin founded Jardine Paper Company with $10 in cash and two truckloads of pine logs that he had purchased from John Huttonbachs Ranch in Redlands Canyon outside Pasadena (now Garden Grove). From this start came one of Southern California's most important paper companies - Jardine Paper Company Ltd., now known as Honeywell International Incorporated (HII), remains headquartered here today with over 650 employees worldwide

Pico Rivera is located in the San Bernardino County of California, approximately 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population of Pico Rivera at the 2010 census was 9,898. The name Pico Rivera may derive from a Spanish word meaning "little hill." According to one account, General Antonio Cámpora, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of California and Mayor of Los Angeles, named this area after his hometown, Pietro Verona (Pieter van der Valk), which lies about 30 miles to the south-west of Alhambra. The first European settlement on what is now Pico Rivera was made by Father Sepúlveda on December 12th 1769 during Mission San Gabriel Arcángel's second year of operation. Father Sepúlveda founded a small mission town called Guadalupe de la Concepción near today's intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Euclid Avenue. From here he also began preaching Christianity to Native Americans and helping them convert to Christianity. By 1800 Pico Rivera had a population estimated at 50 people but by 1851 it had grown to over 2,000 people thanks largely to waves of new arrivals from southern Mexico and Central America who came through Baja California under US jurisdiction looking for land grants or citizenship opportunities. In 1853 Captain John Larkin charted what is now Santa Anita Racetrack on the east side of present day Pico Rivera Boulevard while en route from Monterey Bay Naval Naval Station via Channel Islands National Park with intent to found racehorses there. After reaching Catalina Island off Southern California they continued their voyage northward aboard HMS Beagle which arrived at Point Conception about November 10th 1833 bearing Lieutenant Commander Matthew Flinders with charts revealing an uninhabited island inlatitude 24 degrees north - within sight but not reachable by land - known then as Isla de los Reyes Blancos (Island Of The White Brothers). This became known as Isla de las Gaviotas (Island Of The Sharks) due to nesting Blackfin Shrimps that were common offshore during this time period! On January 5th 1860 John Tipton acquired title deeds for Rancho Paloma del Rey y el Presidio de Islas Malvinas grantee including all buildings on portions lying northeasterly between Julian Street/Old Town Square (now part of University City) and Eagle Alley extending northeasterly along present day Rector Drive/Canyon Road eastward thence easterly along Old Town Square/Julian Street past Palm Canyon Golf Course until reaching said alley leading northerly along present day Rector Drive/Canyon Road into Rancho Paloma del Rey whereupon title remainder passed direct from patentee without sale or exchange! In 1862 John Harkness added parts lying easterly between Julian Street/Old Town Square (now partof University City) and Eagle Alley extending northeasterlyalongpresentdayRectorDrive&CanyonRoadeastWARDTotheresidenceandbecameknownlaterasinRanchopaloima del Rey as well! On October 25th 1865 Manuel Nieto married Beatriz Dominguez Canales atop Monumentto al Virrey Nacional José Joaquín Balboa in honor her father Don José Dominguez Canales Ibarra who had been lieutenant governor during President Porfirio Diaz' long tenure occupying various important posts including Secretary General Law Enforcement Division! It should be noted that don José Dominguez Canales Ibarra was born in Tehuantepec Municipality Guerrero State some sixty miles northwest of Mexico City making him one hundred percent Mexican American!! In 1896 Elihu Root purchased 6 ranchos adjacent thereto forming today's city limits while still holding title deeds covering most if not all acres within those boundaries; thus giving rise once again to discussion over annexation intoLos Angeles proper!!! Today much property within city limits has been annexed since 1896 such as right-of-way for freeways etc... One can only imagine how difficult it would have been back then just trying to keep up with rapidly expanding LA!!!!!! A few weeks ago we attended a history event sponsored by Heritage Gas & Electric Company which included an overview of local history dating back more than 100 years starting with when ranchers started leasing parcels from Spain near modern day downtown Los Angeles! Our own Nancy Peckman shared her memories growing up around these areas describing life before automobiles even existed!!! Despite living inside historic Pasadena for many years we never really got down deep enough about its rich history like Nancy did so we learned quite a lot about our namesake community pockmarked throughout both its early days and its continuing evolution!!!!!
