Pico Rivera is a small, agricultural town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It was established in 1887 by Mormon immigrants who came to the area from Utah. The town has a population of approximately 10,000 people. Pico Rivera is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is bordered by the cities of Carson City and Burbank to the north, Glendale to the east, West Covina to the south-east and Canoga Park to the west. Pico Rivera was originally named "Saddleback" after a hill that overlooked it. In 1892, local ranchers decided to name their community after José Pico Rivera, an Argentine general who had fought for Spain in its war with Mexico. The General's father had arrived in California in 1847 and settled near what is now Pico Rivera. When he died in 1861, his son became interested in ranching and founded a cattle business here which continued until his death in 1903. Upon José Pico Rivera's death some of his cattle were brought back home by friends and family members who donated them to be used at Saddleback Ranch where they remain today. In 1916 when Hollywood began developing as a result of World War I efforts by US President Woodrow Wilson,[1] many new residents moved into Pico Rivera seeking opportunities for work on sound stages or other film production facilities being built throughout Southern California at that time. Many of these newcomers also bought land hereabouts and started farming cotton, wheat and other crops which continues today as one of Pico Rivera's important industries although there are no longer any live witnesses participating therein anymore due to migration reasons (most recently 2006). The first post office opened at PicoRivera on October 15th 1888 under the name "Saddleback". It served only constituents living within three miles (5 km) of its location - those living within Los Angeles County or within five miles (8 km) of Pomona.[2] On November 9th 1893 it changed its name to "Pima".[3] The present day post office reopened on February 20th 1994 with ZIP code 82734.[4][5] The community has experienced various changes over time most notably during World War II when dairy farms were converted into movie studios while Mineola was developed as a residential area primarily composed elderly Japanese Americans (some thought[6][7][8][9][10] that this development may have been Martindale-Hubbell Agent Corporation's plan all along), but gradually most aspects of life returned back almost exactly as they did before significance increased again associated more recently with various events such as Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans prior thereto; however some changes have occurred such as incorporation into adjacent city limits resulting largely from parallel development patterns taking place nearby without much interaction between residents: both neighboring Carson City annexed portions increasing its population significantly since then beginning hosting large grocery stores immediately adjacent thereto frequently providing quality produce/meat items not typically found closer away; redevelopment occurring opposite Carson City High School ensuing numerous new restaurants/bars opening up along Withrow Boulevard immediately adjoining thereof newly redeveloped substantial amounts high end housing developments popping up across several blocks bordering Withrow Boulevard frontsage including homes formerly belonging exclusively to movie stars long tenure extant unchangedalbeit dramatically reduced values becoming available upon annexation thereby creating numerous 'gated communities' if you will permit me so labeling resultant extensive property ownership varied somewhat having little impact whatsoever upon daily goings about quite typical suburban lifestyle characterized nearly every day otherwise very much like everyday residences situated next dooralbeit slightly different looking exterior design notwithstanding
