The Petaluma area was first known as Yerba Buena Cove by Spanish explorers in 1769. Rancho El Sobrante land grantees called it Calafia after Queen Elizabeth II's private island in the Bahamas which they had visited earlier that year. A post office called Petaluma began serving residents of the current town on March 12, 1874. The name may derive from petrel, an endemic bird found near Point Reyes National Seashore and other areas along San Pablo Bay. In 1876, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort, named for him and his partner Jedediah Smith who had explored the area two years earlier with American fur trader Manuel Nieto de Anza; both men were natives of Mexico City. In 1877, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Fort and nearby Sutters Valley, miners began to arrive to find their fortunes under the new sandstone terrain where gold was streaming out like water from a faucet. By 1880s businesses such as hotels and stores had sprung up around what is now downtown Petaluma including one built by James Fenton which still stands today (called "Fenton's"). Petaluma grew rapidly due to its location along San Pablo Bay on the southern end of Silicon Valley, access to shipyards forbuilding warships during World War II (the city became one of several coastal towns bombed), and postwar growth in information technology industries such as satellite telephony and instant messaging services provider telecommunications company America Online Incorporated (AOL). At its peak in 2000, Petaluma employed over 60% of all full-time workers within Silicon Valley; however this figure has declined since then due to rapid job growth in other adjacent counties such as Santa Clara County and San Francisco County while Petaluma lost many jobs in related sectors such as health care or high tech services. However recent economic expansions have seen some resurgence in some aspects of local industry including agriculture due to increased demand for produce from farms east of Highway 101 outside town limits; meatpacking operations connected directly with Interstate 5 near Sonoma; Vacaville’s biggest employer being Home Depot Inc.; natural gas development off Northern California Coast Guard Station Woods Hole; oil production at Petrochemical plant south of town off I-580 about 10 miles north-west of downtown Petalula .

The first post office was established in 1851, and the first school was built in 1861. petaluma became an incorporated city on January 1, 1911. The City of Petaluma is located on the east side of Petaluma Creek between Highway 101 and State Route 24. The City is bordered to the north by Interstate 5 and to the west by State Route 24. The City has a total population of 67,890 as of July 2016, making it one of California's most populous cities. The city was named for Governor Manuel Nieto de Cordova y Linares and his wife María del Carmen Ramirez de la Rúa y Ortiz, who were natives of Mexico City and had come to America in 1824 to help found San Francisco with her husband José Joaquín Herrera y Baca. They traveled down what is now Highway 101 from Mexico City overland and took possession of land north of present-day Petaluma Creek which they named Rancho Santa Anita de los Angeles (later Rancho Tiburones). In 1850, when Captain John C. Frémont discovered gold near Sutro Lake while exploring near Sonoma County, he decided to make Petalula his new mining center because it had been abandoned by other miners after finding no gold thereabouts. In 1852, two years after Frémont founded Petalula, he married Maria del Carmen Ramirez de la Rúa y Ortiz here at rancho Santa Anita de Los Angeles according to Mexican custom then prevailing in California; she would become known as Ramírez de la Rúa or Mrs.Frémont until her death in 1863 following a brief marriage within days at age 36 years old (she died young due to complications from childbirth). By 1865, Mr., Frémont had moved outfitting his mining operation at Rancho Santa Anita into a permanent downtown business district called "Petrarch Row" that still exists today around First Street between Main Street and Second Street adjacent to currently occupied housing units dating back several decades including some remaining built during Mayor Bob Filner's time as mayor beginning with November 7th 1978 when Filner unsuccessfully ran for re-election against incumbent Dianne Feinstein despite being openly gay - all this prior 2 decades before Proposition 8 made homosexual sexual activity illegal statewide prohibiting any form discrimination throughout California regardless from state government buildings not just inside local governments controlled exclusively by homosexuals - thus effectively legalizing same sex relationships statewide effective January 6th 2013 exactly 10 years later since passage of Proposition 8 thereby effectively legalizing same sex relationships statewide across all levels political jurisdictions throughout California prohibited only within state borders under federal law existing since 1954 prior thereto - making Californio onenationless regardless thereof

In 1861, the US government designated Petaluma as an agricultural town because of its fertile soil and natural resources. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Petaluma. The town developed into a small cultural center with a variety of shops and restaurants. In 1906, Petro-Lumber Company started production at their mill on Geary Boulevard in Petaluma. This led to the growth of petrochemical industries across North America and helped spur economic development throughout the region. The city experienced another boom during World War II when it became home to both Naval Air Station Miramar (NAF) and UMAP (United States Maritime Administration). During this time, local businesses produced munitions such as bombs and torpedoes for the war effort.
