It is located on the Petaluma Peninsula on the north end ofSonoma County. The first set of buildings were erected in1857 by Joshua Grosvenor and James Wetherington as part of their land grant to John Bemis. At that time it had one school, two churches (one Congregationalist and one Methodist), a flour millinery, an ice cream parlor, three stores (all open until 10 p.m.), a telephone system with sixteen calls per day (later increased to thirty-six), a hospital (in 1912) and twelve jails/taverns with cells for up to forty inmates each! In addition there were ten miles of track leading into Napa Valley from Petaluma through Eshleman Rancho Seco before connecting with Guerneville Road near what is now Fremont. This railway also facilitated such things as shipping goods between Sonoma County and San Francisco Bay during prohibition days! In 1960 Petaluma voters passed Measure T which designated 20 acres along Saugus Boulevard east of Highway 101 as the town's center square - now home to both local businesses including several banks and various retail shops as well as city hall which replaced the original courthouse building built in 1909 that burned down in 2006. As early as 1870 settlers were living on Davis Creek northeast of present-day Petaluma when European explorers arrived seeking water sources for their horses spread over much of Northern California at this time including what is today Marin County
