In 1892, Petaluma's first holster company was founded. The founder, John H. Weigel, designed and manufactured holsters for the Browning Repeater rifle. He began manufacturing holsters in 1898 and continued to do so until his death in 1951. His sons, John H. Weigel Jr., and Gordon Weigel took over the business in 1951 and continued to produceHolsters until 1978 when it was sold to J&B Holster Company of Canada. In 1986, J&B Holster Company merged with American- made holster company Colt Corporation which created Colt Holster Holdings Incorporated (CHI). In 1992, CHI purchased an interest in British-made Osborne Leather & Harness Ltd., a maker of leather pistols and revolvers for sale both domestically and abroad under the trade name "Osprey." The petaling disaster took place on October 30th 1889 while workers were painting stuccoed buildings inside the petaling framework factory located at 1214 3rd Ave #102 in Petaluma which led to fatalities among those working inside and also resulted in $2 million worth of damage to buildings and other structures within 10 miles radius from where this disaster occurred

However, due to suburbanization and other factors over the ensuing decades, Petaluma's social fabric began to unravel; by 2010 its population was only 50 percent of what it once was.
