Petaluma, California is a town located in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petaluma-Fairfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small farming community in 1847 on the banks of Petaluma Creek. By 1870, Petaluma had become an agricultural center with over 100 acres (40 ha) of land irrigated by water from the creek and hillsides above. In 1875, William Husted founded Husted's Mill which became one of the most important mills in Northern California. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1901 but was rebuilt and continued to produce flour until it closed in 1984 due to automation. In 1892 Gerson & Howe built a hotel called "The Hermitage" on Windom Hill overlooking Petaluma Creek and its canal system for tourists and workers on nearby farms; it remains one of the few remaining Victorian hotels in Northern California today. In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt visited Petaluma while he was campaigning for his re-election; he stopped at Husted's Mill for dinner and then walked downwind to uphill views of Sausalito before spending the night at The Hermitage where he met his future wife Alice Paulsen (1863-1951). Roosevelt later said that this visit "marked my Transition from Candidate to President." In 1938 Captain James Fenton Murry organized an exodus from Japan during World War II led by Tom Dooley who had served as an American prisoner of war at Nagasaki School; Murry established himself as president of what became known as "the Murrys". His son Ron also played a major role in their movement culminating with Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in Japan's surrender . After World War II petrochemical plants were built throughoutSonoma County including Litton Industries' Alameda Plant which produced ethylene oxide pellets for plastics production beginning in 1951 followed by Chevron Chemical Company's Kent plant producing gasoline/ethanol blends beginning 1960s . These plants generated environmental problems such as local air pollution that has been largely eliminated since they closed although some parts have been redeveloped or converted into apartment buildings
The first permanent European settlement in Petaluma was founded in 1851 by Captain John C. Fremont and his party of settlers, who named the town after petunias they found growing near their encampment on the Petaluma River. The town grew rapidly during the Gold Rush era, becoming a booming center for trade and commerce. By 1875, Petaluma had become one of California's most important cities and its population had reached over 10,000 people. The city experienced several surges in growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching a peak in 1920 with a population of 24,500. However, economic recession throughout the 2000s led to significant decline in Petaluma's population and economy. In 2013, Petaluma's mayor announced plans to closure its remaining businesses effective January 1st of 2014 as part of an overall effort to save taxpayers' money.
