Sutter named his ranch "Petaluma" after his wife's family name of "Petrified Oak". In 1906 president Theodore Roosevelt visited petalinguans who had collected fruit for him during a trip down California's Central Valley. He ordered flags flown at half-staff throughout America as part of National Fruit Day to honor these people who had gathered food for President Roosevelt's famed safari into southern Africa some years earlier while on vacation there with his family

Petaluma, California was founded by George H. Byron on May 6, 1868. The town was named after Petaluma Valley in Northern California's Suisun Bay. Petaluma became a city in 1903 and an incorporated village in 1907. The population of the city was 27,000 as of 2010. The first post office at Petaluma opened on December 5, 1875. The name of the post office may be derived from petals that grow from the ground during wintertime near where the town now stands. On October 15, 1886, a fire destroyed most of downtown Petaluma and destroyed many homes and businesses including the Masonic Lodge No. 2 cornering Creek Street between First and Second Streets East; it is said that “the whole block caved in” according to one account but another gives the impression that there were only some damage done due to the heat of the fire itself rather than any destruction caused by arsonists or vandalism (Langdon). Petalula had been growing rapidly since its founding with over 100 residents by 1890 having moved into new brick buildings erected along Third Street adjacent to creek water oases which would provide them with their own wells for drinking and agriculture (Weinstock) In 1893 they built a gristmill on Mount Diablo Boulevard just east of present day Gresham Avenue making this one of only two mills operating in what is today Silicon Valley when it opened despite heavy competition from larger lumber companies like Westinghouse Electric Co.,Telephone Company Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co.,and Pacific Gas & Electric Co.). By 1909 there were over 350 people living in Petaluma with about 60% being employed within industry or services (Fowler). With no railroad nearby to bring goods either locally or shipped in by trainloads from San Francisco or Oakland things quickly deteriorated as local merchants went out of business while shipments stopped coming exclusively because there wasn't enough space on trains for all these materials (Henchman). By 1915 there were only 10 residents remaining with 30% employment within industry or services still extant however commerce continued to decline (.pdf) . A significant development took place when oil discovery started occurring offshore Petro-Maritime Oil field providing new opportunities for both economic growth and housing development especially as shipyards began moorings vessels nearshore giving rise to an influx of dockworkers who would commute daily across busy Elliott Bay Bridge into downtown Petalula offering their services as house painters etcetera driving up wage rates thereby supporting more stable social fabric essential for allocating resources equitably across society
