Hawthorne obtained permission from Captn Waddell to tapeate San Francisco Bay so that he could observing natural phenomena near Alcatraz Island while waiting for his ship to leave Portsmouth Harbor England bound for New York City on July 7th; upon return trip into San Francisco Bay he observed (and captured) an unknown animal off Alcatraz Island which became known as Pileated Woodpecker or Loggerhead Shrike due to its distinctive headgear (a type of comb). In 1872 Captain Joe Brown organized Coast Guard Squadron Three consisting of five vessels including USS Constitution under command of Commodore Perry DDG(17) . At about this time Coast Guard personnel were using shotguns instead of rifles to deal with smugglers attempting to enter Northern California through difficult straits between Sausalito and China Beach/Fort RossPeninsula

The ordinance established that Petalula would be an independent municipality separate from Santa Rosa and Livermore .
