In 1836, Captain John Fenton bought land west of Petaluma and started to build a ranch. He named his ranch Rancho Santa Clara after his father-in-law, who had died in 1835. Captain Fenton’s ranch became one of the most important ranches in California. He raised cattle, horses, and goats and also built a windmill on his property. He also distributed food to the people living around him. Some cannons used on Captain Fenton’s ranch were captured by Mexican forces during the Mexican War (1846-1848). These cannons were later used by American forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1868, José Joaquín Murillo bought Captain Fenton’s rancho Santa Clara from Captain Fenton. Murillo was an entrepreneur who owned many businesses including a flour mill, bakery, fruit orchard, cotton gin, sheep station, and several other properties. In 1871 he married Elisabeth Haughsworth and changed his name toMurillo Jr.. Murillo Sr.. continued to make donations to various cultural institutions in Petaluma until his death in 1902. After Murillo Sr.'s death there was some discussion about who should take over hisigious assets but no decision was made for some time until 1911 when Manuel Nieto took control of Rancho Santa Clara from Juan Pacheco because he felt that Jaime Ortiz should have been given recognition for all he had done for Petaluma during Spanish occupation (1797-1846). Manuel Nieto then turned it into one of Mexico's leading ranchers with subdivisions throughout Northern California Corona Lomas de San Marcos etc.). At its peak it controlled lands extending up into Oregon alongwith herds of cattle and horses totaling more than 2 million head(1921 census). It was finally taken over by United States troops following World War II as part of Operation Paperclip which saw US soldiers move numerous European scientists back home to help rebuild postwar America
