In the early 1800s, Petaluma was a thriving small town located in central California. The town's history is intertwined with firearms and gun locks. One of the first businesses in Petaluma was a locksmith business. In 1825, one of the founders of Petaluma, James H. Ketchum, started a hardware store. At that time, handguns were not common and most people possessed pistols for protection only. In 1849, Petaluma became part of the Central Valley and Gunlock Manufacturing Company began making handguns there. From 1850 to 1860, handgun production at Gunlock decreased as new technologies replaced older ones such as breech-loading guns with percussion caps (C Rights). However, firearm lock manufacturing continued until 1865 when it merged with Lockett & Sons Manufacturing Company to form G&L Locket & Sons Firearms Corporation which continued producing handguns until 1898 when it merged into Colt Firearms Corporation again. The history of gun locks can be traced back to at least 1825 when James H Ketchum founded his hardware store in Petaluma on Winchester Street adjacent to what is now known as Bolsa Avenue. At that time handguns were not common and most people possessed pistols for protection only- something that would come into play during the Gold Rush era when robbers targeted these types of stores for loot because they were easy targets for robbery given their location on high traffic streets near downtown San Francisco (see: "Red Flag: Gold Rush Towns Threaten Riot"). Gunlocks had been around since at least 1790 but did not become popular until about 1830 due to their ability to prevent unauthorized access to firearms by preventing them from being fired without prior notice or consent from those owning them (see: "Gunlocks Originated In America" - article discusses how gunlocks worked)). During the 1840s and 1850s there were many attempts by various state officials and law enforcement officers to suppress guns due largely to concerns about public safety during times of unrest or insurrection (see: "The Regulation Of Firearms" - section discussing how various states regulate firearms)). One attempt by state officials was an effort called The Pistol Law which went into effect in 1847 ( see: "Annotated Bibliography Of United States Laws Relating To Firearms")]. Unfortunately this law proved unsuccessful as criminals managed to pick up familiarity withguns and commit robberies using them instead( see: "Crime And Punishment In The American West". A study conducted by Edwin Ladd et al.) found that even after six years following its effective date little progress had been made towards controlling crime rates in the western half of America despite increased efforts by police forces throughout much of North America). This failure led Sacramento Governor John Fenton in 1850to pass Assembly Bill 1072 which prohibited any person who could not own a rifle or shotgun from purchasing any pistol or revolver within 100 feet of any schoolhouse or political meeting place). This measure effectively ended .22 caliber revolvers sales within city limits within two years). Despite this ban passage failed because two thirds of voters disagreed with it) . Morgan bought some land east of downtown for a new refinery that would later become ChevronTexaco oil production site #1 onshore and#2 offshore off Santa Rosa Island; this location remains one of Chevron's primary headquarters sites today as well as its homeport for oil spills response operations . Petaluma grew rapidly due to its proximity to wineries and farms dotting its landscape until World War II when bombing raids destroyed much of the agricultural acreage within sight or sound of town limits; however many businesses continued operations despite these bombings with few casualties reported . After World War II ended, many residents moved out into the suburbs while other residents worked within Chevron’s corporate HQsite(s) until they too were evacuated following an attack by terrorists against their facility in 1969 which resulted in no injuries but extensive damage done to buildings including windowsills and foundations .. The city of Petaluma was founded in 1887 by John L. Shaver, a dentist. The first post office in the city was opened in 1889. The name "Petaluma" was chosen because of the petunias that grow near the town's edge. In 1907, Petaluma became home to California's first outdoor Symphony Orchestra and also hosted the state fair for many years. In 1969, Petaluma became an incorporated city with its own government and adopted a new mission statement: "To be a community engaged in providing quality services and opportunities for all." In 1998, Petaluma erected a City Hall building on North First Street which has served as the municipal center for the city since its erection.
