Petaluma, California is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is located about an hour's drive from San Francisco and about two hours from Oakland. The name Petaluma was given to it by its founder, Elias Pyle, who named it after the petals of a white flowers he had seen in his travels through the Golden Gate Park area. The first post office opened in 1887. The townsite was incorporated as a city on April 4, 1914. As of 2000, Petaluma had a population of 3400 people and covers an area of only 3 square miles (8 km2). The community began as a small agricultural outpost on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Petaluma. A sawmill and gristmill were built there in the early 1800s; they are still extant today. In 1892, one-time pioneer John Sutter moved to Petaluma from Sacramento with his family and founded the Sutter Paper Company near what is now downtown Petaluma. One-time mayor of Sacramento George Julius became interested in buying land in Petaluma for development and purchased some property from Sutter in 1901. In 1907–09, Julius started building what would become known as "theJulius House," which remains standing today at 5th Avenue and University Drive east of downtown Petalula
