John Waddell discovered petrified wood at Petaluma Creek in present-day Petaluma and offered land for sale to settlers. In 1851, Mayor Amon Young granted a deed for 640 acres (2 km²) of land at what is now southbound I-280 near Pleasanton to Burt Salisbury. On July 12, 1852, Commodore John Dutton sailed his ship USS Constitution into San Francisco Bay and identified the petrified wood at Cape Lookout as having come from an ancient windmill that he had found while cruising past during his survey of Point Reyes Peninsula.. The first buildings in Petaluma were built soon afterwards by Mrs. Silliman who ran the stores and services along with her three daughters: Mrs Talbot Richards (1850–1927), Mrs 1st Lady Mary Keppel (1853–1921), and Miss Emma Silliman (1855–1945). The Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Petaluma on November 16, 1896; it was one block east of downtown before turning south on Union Avenue between First Street and Second Street NW On December 3rd 1886 local citizens voted not to annex any other incorporated community into their town because they felt that annexation would have diluted their individuality & strengthened Oakland which already had 4 incorporations whereas they desired 10 residents only
Petaluma was founded in 1847 by Captain George E. Smith and his wife, Martha A. Smith as a small town on the north shore of Petaluma Bay. The town grew rapidly, reaching a population of 300 by 1850. By 1857, the town had an Academy and two churches. In 1865, Petaluma became an incorporated city and joined the California State Railroad system. The city's first mayor was John Fenton (1865-68). In 1867, the city voted to become a dry town and it has been so ever since.
