Perris is a city located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 761 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico– tracked Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Perris was first settled by Native Americans in the late 19th century. In 1853, Jose Maria Aguirre organized a group of settlers to take up land grant from Rancho Cucamonga at what is now Fourth and Figueroa Streets. They called their new town Los Angeles de San Bernardino (The Californians from Santa Barbara). In 1857, local farmers began raising hay for market in an open-air pen on the site of what is now downtown Perris. This early commercial growth led to the construction of two stores and a post office in 1860, which became the nucleus of present-day Perris. A millinery shop and pet store were founded in 1865 by Mrs. Lillie Prentice. By 1875, there were six businesses operating in downtown Perris: three stores, one grocery store, one bank account company and two schoolhouses; all but one were operated by womenfolk or their husbands until recent times. In 1879, Spanish explorer Hernando Montoya expedition discovered San Bernardino County while exploring California southward along what is now Interstate 5; he named it after his patron saint – San Bernardino de la Frontera – and this opened up some much needed grazing land for cattle on what are today’s Riverside Drive and other streets within town limits today! Soon after that discovery gold started flowing into this area through various trails ending east of Palmdale/ western Riverside counties! Mining operations increased as water supplies dwindled near contemporary Glendora thanks to aquifer depletion caused by overpumping during dry years; however no major discoveries were made so little gold was found hereabouts that public interest waned until large quantities turned up northeast of Sacramento when hydraulic fracturing began occurring underground (see below).
