It is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The community began as an agricultural community near what is now Perris Valley and was named for Captain James Fenton Perry who explored the area in 1847. The first post office in Perris opened in 1876. In 1909, local ranchers formed the "Bakersfield Game Wardens" to protect game animals in their properties. The first store was built in 1912 and became a department store known as the Big Wagon Store until it closed in 1971. A new store was built from scratch between 1975 and 1977 and again became a department store when Big Wagon Store sold its stores to JCPenney on October 14, 2007. In 1957, perry's grocery chain merged with Lucky Stores Incorporated forming Lucky Supermarkets Corporation which operated over 800 stores throughout North America by 1987. On July 1st 2009 many of these stores were combined into one large complex called "Lucky Supermarket". At that time there were over 2200 employees working at this complex including 1400 shoppers who enjoyed free samples every day! On January 26th 2020 a fire destroyed most of Lucky Supermarket causing significant loss to businesses within walking distance of where customers shopped daily for years!
