Perris is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, located on the east side of John Muir National Forest. The community was founded by Mormon settlers in 1879 and named for Brigham Young's nephew and namesake, Warren Perris. As of the 2010 census, its population was 514. The town derives its name from Brigham Young's nephew and namesake, Warren Perris. In 1879, Warren purchased a Rancho Cahuilla tract fromñe de la Hoz y Fierro for $1,000. He named it Perris after his uncle-in-law who had given him this land. The first post office opened in 1881 with Wm. H. Sinton as mail carrier; it closed in 1907 because of Mulberry Street logging being done near the Post Office Square at that time. The current Post Office building was built in 1928 and is one of the few remaining nineteenth century structures within the boundaries of present day Perris. Warren Peruis also developed a successful fruit industry which supported several small villages aroundJohn Muir National Forest until 1978 when all but two were destroyed by fire while they were being used to make pulp paper for Napa Valley wine bottles This resulted in many people moving away from this rural area during the early 1990s as a result of numerous job loss opportunities associated with the local paper mill closure
