Perris, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino–Riverside-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Perris was established on November 3, 1873, and closed on July 13, 1905. The current post office building was built in 1957 and replaced an older building that had been used as a school and store. As early as 1847 there were settlements in Kern County by Mormons who had emigrated from what is now Utah. In 1849 there was also an American Fur trader's station here called "Bear Valley". On December 12th of that year the Mexican state of Baja California granted Rancho Arvin to John C. Fremont for $5 per acre (originally $10) after he explored it near what is now Perris and reported back favorably about its potential for agriculture. The rancho soil would be valuable for farming but no one began developing it until 1871 when a group of men from Stockton formed the Stockton & Nevada Railroad to transport goods between Stockton and Sacramento via Arroyo Grande Pass over Mountdefine which they named Fremont Ravine after General John C."Fremont" Ulysses S.? Grant who had financed their venture In 1881 Perris became part of the newly created City of Los Angeles when it was annexed by Los Angeles County In 1907 the last remaining Mormon settlers left California; most moved to Oregon or Mexico where they continued practicing their religion On February 19th 1909, during World War I US munitions manufacturing plants associated with Jardin Aeronautique went up in flames around milepost #2 (now milepost #8), burning down more than 100 structures including 10 stores/ warehouses before being extinguished using fire hoses . This event remains known as the Red Fire Incident . By 1920, Perris had a population of over 100,000 people and was one of the largest cities in Southern California. The city experienced significant growth after World War II as a result of military installation development around nearby Willowbrook Air Base and other suburban areas.
