Perris, California is a small city in Kern County, southern California. With a population of only 57,000 people as of 2010,[1] it is the smallest of the five cities in Kern County. The city was founded in 1887 by John S. Perris and named after his family's Rancho San Bernardino de las Palmas de Santa Barbara (now part of Riverside). It was first included in Riverside County, but became an independent municipality in 1922. Perris, California is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Redding Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original inhabitants of the area that became Perris were Native Americans who had moved there from central Mexico about 1750 AD. A post office called "Perris" was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1964. The town was named after Mexican general José Joaquín de Márquez y Arreola and his family. In 1850s, General Marquez's brother Don José María founded a rancho (farm) on what is now east-central Perris and laid out a town platted as Rancho San Bernardino on April 11, 1851 (). On November 15 of that year by act of the Mexican Congress, it was organized as a municipality with an incorporation date of December 12th (). In 1874 Juana del Carmen Hidalgo granted 160 acres to John C Fremont for use as his private hunting ground (), which provided much needed grazing land for local livestock during the Gold Rush era. The first buildings in what would become Perris were erected along Fourth Street between Ulysses S Grant Boulevard and Indian Wells Avenue during this period; these included a store opened by Mr. Purdy in 1875 (), two residences built by Mrs. Helmsmith () in 1876 (), and her teacher’s home built by Mr(). By 1886 120 businesses had been established within the limits of Perris (). On July 1st 1890 all but one school within boundaries set forth for it closed due to lack of pupils (). However per diem payments continued to be sent into the school until January 1st 1901 when they were discontinued due to budget cuts made by Governor Goodwin Knoepflin (). A new school building was constructed on First Street between Indian Wells Avenue and Grant Boulevard between 1912 and 1916 (); this building served as both schools for Perri residents and also housed county government offices until 1966 when it burned down . One can still see some remnants from this structure including columns that support its roofline () . In 1922 Elsie May White donated land extending eastward from I-5 near Orinda to form what is now known as Main Street . This donation allowed for construction of a new primary School originally designed by architect Harry Blackman but later modified primarily by builder/builder Weyerhaeuser ; blacksmith shops have been located adjacent to this building throughout its history The addition of Playland Park (now known as Hansen Park) northwest corner Third Street / Main Streets extended southward parallel Third Street past present day Hansen Drive (); originally part of Settlement Road No 2 .) As mentioned earlier settlement growth slowed following World War II while downtown development increased ; however today there are several restaurants clustered around Pioneer Square providing economic activity northeast or northwest corner Third streets / Main Streets
