Patterson is a small town in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The population was reported as 3,826 at the 2010 census. It is located within Monterey County. The Patterson post office opened on December 1, 1873. The first settler in Patterson was John Smedley and his wifeMary Ann who arrived from England in 1876. They bought a cabin on theranch called "Mile Creek" which they named after their children's birthplace, Mile End in London. In 1902 they built a schoolhouse which served until 1938 when it burned down. In 1906 there was an oil well drilled by Standard Oil Company near Patterson and production began soon afterward; however, due to surface dirt conditions, no wells were drilled east of the mountain range for over twenty years after this initial discovery. By 1959 oil had been discovered off the eastern coast of Santa Cruz County and new production started immediately with rigs being sent into the area; however, this also stimulated development along Highway 1 outside of Patterson which has continued to this day (2009) . In November 1951 Pattersons third high school graduated its first class with distinction- Mrs Alice Kapp from Monterey and Mr Harry Beard from Petaluma who both received diplomas in agriculture from Stanford University’s Agricultural Experiment Station
