The first people to live in Patterson were the Mono people. They were followed by the Yokuts, who moved from central California to Patterson in 1851. The community was named for Colonel George Patterson, a United States Army officer who served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1872, a post office was established at Patterson and it continued to be called that until 1959. The town began to grow rapidly after oil came to Patterson in 1913 when Standard Oil CompanyTexaco drilled an oil well near the town. By 1920, the town had over 100 businesses and 2 schools. In 1925, construction began on what would become One Valley High School which opened its doors in 1927. Today, One Valley High School is one of the most popular high schools in Kern County with over 1,000 students attending its classes each year. In 1929, Pattersons first church was built upon land donated by Mrs John Hargrave and Mr Augustus Fenton Jr.. The new church was dedicated on October 5th and became home to many local residents as well as ministers from across Southern California while also serving as a meeting place for religious groups throughout Kern County including Baptists, Methodists etcetera In 1931 a fire destroyed much of downtown Patterson but did not damage any buildings other than one school which fortunately reopened without damage within weeks With World War II raging nearby some citizens decided it would be better if they just moved away so they did On July 15th 1945 an air raid hit east side of town killing 10 people including 4 children aged 6-9 years old

In 1856, Patterson donated land to the town for a school and courthouse. The first building in the town was the home of Mrs. Hays which served as the public library until 1909 when it burned down. In 1865, Patterson developed what is now downtown Patterson with money he had gained working on a railroad project.
