Patterson, California (formerly Oakland) is a city located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. The population was 105,815 at the 2010 census. Patterson was founded in 1851 by John C. Patterson as an agricultural town on Rancho Palomar, now part of Hayward. In 1875, it became a consolidated city and was named for John C. Patterson's wife, who had been born in 1847 in nearby Fremont. The first post office opened in Patterson on December 10, 1851. The name of the town may be derived from Spanish "patria" meaning home or family and "torre" meaning watchtower or fortification. It has also been suggested that the name may come from English "patriots", because many early settlers were U.S.-born Americans who had fought for independence from Great Britain during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1865, when Rancho Palomar was sold to George Hearst and his partner Sylvester Pryor, they decided to move their cattle operation north into Contra Costa County where they would have more pastureland and less competition from ranching operations east of San Francisco Bay. In addition to creating new grazing areas for their animals, Hearst also increased production by building two large windmills – one situated atop Mount Diablo near Antioch and another near Redwood City – which he used to power his growing Journal Company newsprint business. Hearst continued to expand Journal Company until its largest plant at 1110 Market Street became world famous for printing coupons for Coca-Cola products during World War I; it remained an important manufacturing center until1999 when it merged with Dow Corning Corporation to form Unilever Plc.. In 1907 Sacramento County Agricultural Commissioner Hurlbert bought 5 square miles west of Patterson on what is now Orinda after purchasing land bordering eastern Contra Costa County from Hiram Maxim & Sons Store employer James Broughton Jr.. himslef having purchased 100 acres east of Sacramento Valley about 1 mile northwest of present day MacArthur Boulevard and including what is now downtown Patterson along with property lying south past Center Street on Rancheria Creek which borders Martinez Township on the east side while portions of Highland Oaks Cemetery extend into Contra Costa County beyond Martinez Township line.. A year later Hurlbert donated 320 acres of this land comprising present day Westfield Shopping Center including much of downtown Patterson as well as most acreage between Center Street/Rancheria Creek Rd./Alameda Blvd./Fremont Way/Downtown Carter Road etc., forming what is today North Park Plaza development adjacent to North Park BART Station accessible via pedestrian mall just east off MacArthur Boulevard between First Avenue/Fremont Way NW and University Avenue Northeast corner Note: North Park Plaza development does not include any buildings within 500 feet thereof nor any other portion thereof within any incorporated area
