In 1870 George H.'s older brother Amos Wm. Patterson homesteaded a parcel on present day east side of I-5 just north of the old schoolhouse and east of Highway 99 (now US 101). Patterson, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 2,471 as of the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first human being to live in Patterson was José Ortega on October 14, 1847. In 1849, Hernando Cámpora and his wife named Eliza founded a simple cabin in what is now the east side of town. A post office called Patterson was established in 1850, and the first school was built near the present street junction in 1851. In 1861, James Laughlin discovered oil at nearby Porter Ranch and began production at Patterson Station. The discovery led to an oil boom that started up within a few years and contributed significantly to Patterson's growth during this time period. By 1880, Patterson had become one of the largest towns west of Sacramento due to its proximity to new oil fields and its strategic location for transportation within reach of both San Francisco and Los Angeles. By 1910, however, Patterson's economy had begun to decline as a result of low commodity prices and other factors such as heavy reliance on agriculture for income while new industries such as mining began developing around nearby Kern County. As a result, many residents left town during the Great Depression which caused further decline in the community's fortunes until it finally ceased operations altogether by 1938 when World War II interrupted any further development nationally or locally. However, since then there have been sporadic efforts made by local groups to revive interest in resurrecting former commercial values within Patterson while also preserving its historical significance dating back more than 100 years . There are several heritage-listed buildings still standing today which include: The James Laughlin Oil Company Building (1910), Hernando Cámpora Cabin (1849), Eliza Lopez House (1891), Adobe Walls Schoolhouse (1875), Peralta Adobe (1906). Additionally there are several vacant lots remaining undeveloped with potential for future development including: Lot 1 south side extension from intersection of Center Street eastward; Lot 3 north side extension from intersection of Center Street westward; Railroad right-of-way south between Center Street eastward and Frazier Avenue northeast towards downtown Fresno; Slaughter House lot across from Brady Park
Patterson, California was founded by brothers George and John Patterson in 1853. The town became a ghost town after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
