In 1922, it became one of the first plants in the United States to produce hand grenades (the first was built at Fort Myer). It continued producing grenades until 1958 when it switched to producing rifle rounds. The plant grew rapidly during World War II with production totaling over two million rounds per day. However, after the war ended there was a lull in output and it closed in 1951. The plant reopened in 1957 as a reloading center for rifles and shotguns before becoming an ammunition plant again in 1984. Today’s Patterson Ammunition Plant is one of America’s most important firearms factories and employs more than 1,300 workers across four shifts (+8 overtime hours per week) to produce munitions such as bullets and shells for use by military forces around the world.

The first residents of what would become Patterson were Mexican laborers who had been brought overland from Mexico City. George B. Patterson built his house on the current site of what is now southeast corner Main Street and First Avenue in 1887; it still stands today and is used as a museum/library annexe. Over time other pioneers also arrived in what would be called "the new township": A C H R O W N M I L L , F U G H T S K E R P A Y S D E T A I L . By 1912 there were 10 businesses in operation with an population of 640 people living within walking distance of their homes: four hotels (the Hotel Californian, American Legion Post No 2 Hall & Live Stock Showroom), six grocery stores (Grocery store #1 Store & Weiser's Meat Market), two banks (First National Bank Building & Trust Company & National Bank Building), two churches (Church of God Episcopal @ First Presbyterian Church) and one schoolhouse which served grades kindergarten through eighth grade until it closed in 1944 due to World War II bombing raids then being conducted against military installations nearby such as Fort Bliss Army Airfield outside Los Angeles County which destroyed much residential housing east of San Bernardino Pass including many homes near where modern-day Patterson sits today. In 1916 George B. Patterson donated land comprising present-day east side streets Second Avenue northward to create what would become downtown; this area now houses several blocks of three-story brick buildings built primarily during World War II as military barracks for officers caring for aircraft at nearby Wright Field; these barracks are now open to the public as part of Historic Downtown Patton
