Pasadena, California is a city in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is the second-largest city in Southern California after Los Angeles. The population of Pasadena was 113,846 as of 2019. The first permanent settlers in Pasadena were two brothers, George and David Jones, who arrived on April 6, 1871 from Portland, Oregon. They named their new town "Pasadena" in honor of then-Governor Manuel Nieto's home state of Guerrero (now part of Mexico City). The Joneses were followed by other pioneers and farmers in the early years: Robert Harkness (1872), John Brougham (1874), W Fenton (1875), J Southerland (1876), James Irvine (1877). In 1887, Pasadena was incorporated as an independent municipality. On November 17th of that year it passed a resolution to become one hundred percent Americanized within five years. When Mexican president Porfirio Díaz became involved with a power struggle with President Grover Cleveland over railroad construction projects across the United States, he moved his government center from Mexico City to Querétaro so that he could oversee those projects directly. Pasadena chose not to follow Mexico City's example and remained an autonomous municipality. Diaz's successor Asphalt Paving Company founder Hiram Johnson established himself as its first mayor; he also served briefly as U.S. trade representative during Diaz's term that ended on July 4th 1902. With no official seat on the Board of Regents at USC until 1912 when Frederick Law Olmsted became chancellor there following Mayor Waddell's resignation effective January 1st 1912 due to health reasons – Olmsted's leadership helped spur development at USC such as Olmsted Stadium and Memorial Stadium which opened in 1923 and 1928 respectively - Pasadena began to lose some prestige because it was not near UCLA or other major universities like those in New York or Boston where students lived and worked before moving on to larger towns closer to home for college education while still having access to excellent education available here too without leaving town for extended periods any more than necessary. In fact enrollment at local colleges had begun declining even before Johnson initiated plans for expansion into larger campuses now known collectively as University Park/ La Cañada Flintridge by 1972 when they finally took shape thanks largely to then-Mayor Artvoice Richards’ master plan which called for expanding UC Riverside into what is today Northridge along Main Street eastward from RFK Airport through Harbor Boulevard into downtown annexation including most recently Claremont Colleges taking over Residence Hall East Campus thereby completing University Park/La Cañada Flintridge’s transformation from small agricultural communityurbant backwater located just outside downtown LA County limits “just south”of Aviation Drive into one of Southern California’s largest city cores full time teacher focused higher education destinations choice away from congested urban areas By 1984 enrollment at both UC Riverside and Claremont Universities had reached nearly 20,000 students each making them coeducational institutions equivalent in size only to Stanford University(then Menlo Park) despite being located only 14 miles east of Palo Alto.
