The Parlier Community Observatory was established in the early 1920s by a group of local farmers. The observatory was located on a piece of land leased from the Santa Clara County government. The first telescope, an 8-inch Newtonian reflecting telescope, was installed in 1922 and used to view conjunction stars. In 1934, the community purchased a 10-inch reflector telescope from the National Astronomical Observatory in Washington D.C.; it remained in use until 1984 when it was replaced by a new 20-inch Schmidt telescope. In 1951, the Parlier Citizens’ Association donated a 15-meter reflector telescope to be used at Parlier Community Observatory; it remained in use until 2003 when it was replaced by a new 30-meter Schmidt telescope. In 2008, the community donated another 15-meter reflector Telescope to be used at their High Desert Campus; this telescope will remain operational until 2019 when it is replaced by a new 50-meter Schmidt Telescope. Since its inception, theParlier Community Observatory has made significant contributions to astronomy through its collection of telescopes and research programs. Today, the parliercommunityobservatory continues its mission of providing access to science and education for all who visit its facilities.

Just a few miles from the modern town of Parlier in California, there was a small community of Native Americans known as the Klamath tribe. The Klamath people were hunter-gatherers who lived near the confluence of the Rogue and Umpqua Rivers. They used their natural resources to survive and hunted game that ranged across North America. "The first Europeans to explore this area were De Anza Expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769." In 1821, Captain John C. Fremont explored what is now Oregon and discovered the Siskiyou Mountains. In 1825, another party of Spanish explorers found what is now California while on their way to Santiago de Chile. The first European settlers in this area were Missionaries who arrived in 1827. Some early pioneers who moved west included Jedediah Smith, who founded Rancho Rinconada in 1850; Gold Rush miners such as James Ferguson; and Frank Haughton, founder of Haughton Air Force Base near Sacramento.

Parlier, California is located in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles west of Sacramento. The town was founded in 1849 by James Parlier and his wife, Mary Clements. The first post office was established in Parlier in 1850. In 1851, the community became a railroad town and soon developed into a agricultural center with cattle and grain production. By 1898, however, the population had dropped to just over 100 people and the town declined until it was abandoned in 1955. Today, there are only a few ruins remaining from Parlier’s past including the James P. Walsh House which was built in 1851 and is now used as a museum; and the Parlier Methodist Church which was built around 1865. Parlier’s history began with its location on the eastern edge of what is now Fresno County. At that time most of what is today Fresno County belonged to Mexico before it was acquired by Spain in 1769 as part of Rancho San Joaquin de Rosario de la Vieja de Huasteca y Calafia (the old Huasteca region). In 1846 Mexican soldiers rebelled against Spanish rule and discovered gold near modern day Fresno when they were exploring for new land to settle. As part of their rebellion, these soldiers also stole equipment from Spanish forces stationed atMission San Miguel Arcángel (now known as Mission Dolores). This event led to Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordering all Californios – Native Americans included – to leave their homes within 10 days or be executed. This order caused an exodus of many Californians eastward into national territory under US control. In response to this large-scale immigration event, James Purdy founded Parlier on November 6th, 1849 after purchasing 2 acres adjacent to present day Highway 99 south of downtown Fresno from Manuel Nieto aka “Chico” Chavez for $600 dollars ($10 per acre). The original plat shown above contains 4 square blocks spread out over an area that would eventually measure 133 acres today (not including any water features or natural resources). Within weeks of its founding, Parlier had erected a small local courthouse using adobe bricks from nearby Middletown while also building a jail/cattle stable on what is now Main Street #2nd Floor which still stands today (it opened in January 1850).[1] The town grew steadily through both agriculture and ranching until it reached its peak during World War I when it had around 1200 residents.[2] However due to World War II austerity measures implemented by United States planners following Britain's war effort everywhere between 1941-1945 inclusive,[3],[4],[5]and again following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941,[6],the community slowly declined throughout the 1940s while becoming virtually defunct by 1951 when American troops withdrew from California altogether.[7],[8] It wasn't until 1955 that plans were made for abandonment due to lack of needed infrastructure such as Roads & Streets etc., however little happened until 1978 when one surviving inhabitant decided he wanted back his childhood home he grew up inside but never saw because it changed hands multiple times during his lifetime outside his family’s ownership according [9],[10]. Consequently efforts commenced by both local government officials[11][12],[13]]as well as private individuals[14])to revive interest once more within Parlier since its abandonment several decades ago has resulted largely positive results with increased visitation rates along with various historical exhibits being staged throughouttown annually since 1978 thru 2019 currently totaling 5 events total!
