Parlier has also been known for its cheese industry which began in the late 1800s. The first permanent settlers in Parlier were James W.Parlier and his wife Eliza A. Parlier who arrived in 1876 from Illinois. James W.Parlier was a Lutheran minister who had come to preach the gospel to Native Americans living along the banks of the Sacramento River near modern-day Fresno, California. He had heard about a place called Butte Creek where farmers could grow crops and sell their products inland to local consumers on credit until railways came through and took away those lands! So when he found out about this site, he decided to move his family there so they could start fresh! James W.}W}Parlier soon realized that he would need some land himself so he started purchasing property with money borrowed from friends and family members until he had enough land reserved for himself and his family at Butte Creek (now part of Ramallah). In 1877, James finally moved his family into their new home on what would become known as "the Farm." The farm included several acres of agricultural land which grew corn, beans, apples, grapes, potatoes etc., while also producing hay, straweelevesand other types of produce necessary for human nutrition such as meat (einkorn), eggs (laying hens), butter (butterfly) etc….. When all was said & done it amounted to around 4 acres! This early parlor/bedroom addition still stands today on our property - one can only imagine how accommodating it must have been back then when everyone lived together without any indoor plumbing or air conditioning! In 1880 James married Rhoda Matson who was also from Illinois but she didn't stay long after finding out that she couldn't pregnant because she lacked proper supplies needed during that time period…….. She eventually remarried but never leftCalifornia………. James Warrington Pletcher settled down permanently around 1885 with Rhoda's sister Emmeline Cramer whom he met whilst teaching school at an old fort on nearby Middle Ranch Road Some time later Emmeline gave birth to a daughter named Lillie who would go on to marry John Bakewell II – a dairy farmer from central California’s Humboldt County
The first permanent settler in what is now Parlier, California was Nicholas de Lesseps on July 14, 1847. De Lesseps and his family were the first Europeans to set foot on the present day site of Parlier. The town was founded by him and his wife, Mary Ann Dodge, in 1850. At its peak, Parlier had a population of 100 people. By 1870, the population had decreased to 20 people due to the Gold Rush. The town declined after that and only remained active for a few years before it disappeared completely from history.
