In 1881, Frenchman Pierre-Emmanuel Parlier purchased a 640 acre Rancho San Miguelito in the area now known as Parlier Valley. The ranch was started by José Maria Cabeza de la Cruz who arrived in 1847 from Mexico and named it Rancho San Miguelito. In 1876, Carlos María Pico took over the ranch and changed its name to Rancho San Francisco. In 1916, George H.W. Peabody bought the ranch for $350,000 and changed its name to Rancho Los Olivos. During World War II, theranch was used as a troop training ground for United States Marine Corps troops located at Camp Pendleton in nearby Santa Barbara County. On October 15, 1942, when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor, Parlier Valley became an important site of defense for western California because it had been uninhabited since 1769 when missionaries discovered oil reserves on the Peninsula slope. The valley has also been associated with numerous events in California’s history such as Juan Bautista Moraga’s uprising against Spanish rule in 1821 and American Exploration of the Owens Valley which began in 1861. On October 15th of that year (1886), Mexican nationals José Manuel Cortés and Vicente Guerrero were brought before Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing of Ulysses S Grant’s 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Point naval base on Long Beach Island for trial by court martial after their attack on two American sailors who had mistaken them for hostile Indians during a cattle drive near Point Conception (now downtown Long Beach). At about 10:00 AEDT on that date Cortés and Guerrero entered into agreement with Captain David Ewing of USS Constitution “for joint resistance to public authority if captured or captured alive” after being told they would be shot if found guilty; however twelve minutes later whileECTing ashore to return aboard Constitution Commodore John Dory reported that both men had disappeared without leaving any tracks behind them so he ordered his crew to start searchlights throughout the night in case they were hiding among rocks offshore where they might have cached supplies or waiting to ambush ships coming into harbor en route home from duty off Ship Channel [later called Harbor City]. With little hope of finding them alive some twenty hours later Enterprise sailed back out into open waters just off point Conception looking for any sign of them but still no luck... Soon afterwards word came through radio operators aboard Constitution that Cortés and Guerrero had absconded withoverland across country about sixty miles northwest up Interstate 5 past Cheyenne River National Monument until finally succumbing(_)to starvation within sight of civilization._ The event is significant because it marked one time when Mexicans working under U.S jurisdiction unlawfully crossed state lines into California in order to resist American rule
