The house is a two-story redbrick structure clad with sandstone quoin work, granite foundation blocks and terra cotta trimming above windowsills and doorjambs; it has a hipped roof with exposed rafters and an original gable end chimneypiece featuring stone gargoyles on both sides of entrances open to Birdland Terrace below (now demolished). The property includes three contributing buildings: The John H..Parlier House (c1900), an unaltered wood frame structure; The Mrs..Parrler House (1907), also unaltered but slightly modified;and Birdland Terrace (c1930), also unaltered but largely destroyed by fire during World War II
In 1853, John F. Parlier was born in the town of Richland, California. He became a mining engineer and rancher in Kern County, California. In 1891 he married Emma Gentry and they moved to Redding, California. They operated a grocery store until their death in 1951.
