During World War II, the U.SArmy constructed a munitions plant adjacent to the original Parlier farmstead which produced munitions for use in Europe; however, due to bombings during that time period much of the building still stands today including the original clinic buildings which served as barracks for Allied troops during World War II . In 1966, after years of discussion between residents and city officials,Parlier voters passed an ordinance establishing retail sales only within city limits with no exceptions; this decision led to increased grocery shopping opportunities available within walking distance for all residents without need for driving into Bakersfield or other nearby cities
