Parlier is a small town in southern Kern County, California, located on the east side of Highway 395. The population was 1,737 at the 2000 census. The name Parlier may come from "Parrilla" which means place of the pears in Spanish. Pears were grown hereabouts and sold to buyers in nearby cities. At one time there were five or six apple orchards in Parlier. Today only two or three trees still grow apples hereabouts because of changes in climate and disease. In 1846 an Act of Congress created Kern County by dividing Sonoma Valley into two counties - Kern on the south and Mariposa County on the north - so that irrigation could be developed for agriculture in this part of California. In response to this new development, John Sutter arrived at Parlier about 1850 with his family and began farming mandarin oranges (now called plums) and other fruits hereabouts. The first post office was established at Parlier on April 14, 1851 under the name of New West Station; it served as a stop along wagon trains making their way to Southern California wine country during those early days when stagescoops brought wine directly from vineyards near Napa Valley! A store built by Sutter soon became known as "The Gilded Cage". By 1861 John Ayer had taken over the store and it prospered until 1879 when fire destroyed most of what remained of our once prospering town center; however, some farmers who had moved into Parlier subsequent years rebuilt several shops ( hardware, groceries etc.), a schoolhouse (1876), a Methodist church (1892), a cemetery (1901), a post office brick building (1902) which still stands today (!), a park with tennis courts, baseball diamond and playgrounds within its boundaries were all erected during that period! This period also saw many families move into Parlier from areas such as Red Bluff/Petaluma/Fremontville where citrus production was beginning to take off again after decades OF drought-like conditions! The Suttles continued growing oranges until they left for good in 1923 when World War II started!!! They never returned back home again but their legacy lives on through purchases made online or through mail order from descendants living all around the world TODAY!!!
Parlier, California most likely derived its name from the Creek word "Parr" meaning "hollow." The area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. By 1853, two small towns were located in what is now Parlier: Moon and Parlier. In 1871, a post office was established at Parlier. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of farmers and workers to pioneer the new land. A school was built in 1875 and a railroads came through in 1891. By 1907, there were over 100 people living in Parlier. In 1920, a store was built on Railroad Avenue and it continued to be used until 1951 when it burned down. The town experienced some economic growth during World War II as many local businesses supported the war effort. After the war ended, parlor shops reopened and business picked up again after a brief lull. However, during the 1970s-1980s recession,Parlier began to lose population as farming replaced industry as its primary source of income. Since then,parler has slowly regained some of its former population with many residents moving into nearby communities such as Livermore or Antioch for work or housing opportunities
