Paramount is a small town in the southcentral Los Angeles County, California region. It was founded in 1910 by farmers and ranchers, and became an important center for motion picture production and distribution. Paramount became a city in 1930, and from its location near Hollywood made it one of the most cinematically significant cities of the 1920s and 1930s. The name Paramount comes from two adjacent ranchos that were part of the 1885 Rancho Palos Verdes Purchase. In 1903, movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille bought the Rancho Palos Verdes land from developer John D. Rockefeller, making him one of the earliest Hollywood moguls. Over time, Paramount's film industry grew to become one of the world's largest with studios located throughout North America and Europe. The early 20th century was characterized by major changes in American cinema, including technological advances that allowed films to be produced on large scale with high quality production values like those seen in early talkies such as Talkie No1 (1928). movies such as hits like Our Gang (1929) helped establish Paramount as a cultural icon throughout much of North America during this time period
