The town’s growth was slow due to lack of water resources and competition from nearby cities, but by 1861 its population had reached 100 people. In 1865, a canal was built connecting Pasadena with Los Angeles through Paramount County, allowing for more rapid development within the county seat. In 1878–79 Starland Theater opened in Paramount as one of the first movie theaters in Southern California. It became one of Hollywood’s most popular venues for films until it closed in 1950. The theater is now used as an office building.
