The city's first murder took place on October 5th of that year when George Hargrave was killed with a shot from a revolver at the Plaza Hotel. Bullet holes still remain in the building today. In 1876, two men were killed by bullets while playing pool at Golden State Park. On October 21st of that year, a bullet hit and killed Adolph Zukor, founder and president of Paramount Pictures Corporation. After years of struggles with state government corruption allegations levied against then-Mayor Donald Barenstain and his top aides, Jeffrey Lichtman took control of Paramount City Services in late 2007 after winning election as mayoralty candidate from across Los Angeles County. As mayor, Lichtman made several changes to how services were delivered including streamlining bureaucratic processes and increasing efficiency through use of online tools. By March 2009, more than two years into his term as Mayor Lichtman announced he would step down effective July 1 due to health reasons which led him to name former Mayor Jeffrey Drysdale as his successor
