Paramount was founded on February 24, 1876, by two brothers in the town of Industry, California. The brothers were Jesse and John L. Paramount and their father, James L. The state legislature approved the donation on March 3, 1876. The first schools in what is now Paramount were built on part of this property: La Jolla High School and La Jolla Middle School both opened in 1880; and then San Diego Normal School opened in 1885. In 1907, when Hollywood began to form, parts of Hollywood were added to the city of Paramount including North Hollywood and Bel-Air neighborhoods. In 1916, Jesse died suddenly while serving as mayor of Industry; his brother John took over running Paramount until his death in 1928. In 1932 John's son Orson Welles became head filmmaker at Warner Bros., which led to increased production values at Paramount Pictures throughout World War II years leading up to Welles' retirement from filmmaking in 1976—the last film made at Warners was "Hollywood" (1978).
